Two Africans have emerged winners of beat feature writing awards, Munyaradzi Makoni and Chikezie Omeje. The brilliant minds have been recognized for excellent science and scientific innovation reporting.

Nigeria’s Omeje and Zimbabwe’s Makoni have made their nations proud

Nigerian Chikezie Omeje and Zimbabwean Munyaradzi Makoni emerged in Ethiopia as winners of the prestigious award for science journalism.

The award was awarded to Omeje and Makoni during the annual meeting of the Grand Challenges in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Several scientists and policy makers attended the meeting, who regularly come together to encourage and create solutions to global health issues.

A Twitter user identified as AAsciences posted the two winners ‘ image carrying their massive N1 million check each.


ICIR reports that Omeje’s story of mental injury inflicted by the Boko Haram insurgency in northeastern Nigeria won him the award.

It was noticed that Omeje is currently a student of data journalism at the prestigious New York-based Columbia University.
