Ayoba is an instant messaging app designed for Africans by Africans. It is an app that has harnessed the diversity of Africa and created a true pan-African messaging platform by reflecting local needs and aspirations.
On Tuesday, 12 November 2019, MTN announced that its instant messaging service, Ayoba has reached 1 million monthly active users. Ayoba is a messaging app localised for African and Middle East consumer needs, under an independent Over the Top (OTT) brand with unique features for MTN customers. The software supports many local languages spoken across the MTN markets including isiZulu, isiXhosa, Pidgin, Yoruba, Swahili, Hausa, French and English.
It is our belief that our customers in Africa and the Middle East deserve a communications platform which expresses our unique voice, honouring our rich identity through local languages and meeting the specific needs and challenges of our customers by offering data inclusive services for MTN users, mobile money transfers (shortly) and local content via channels.” Says; MTN Group President and CEO, Rob Shuter.
Ayoba, launched early this year is now active in eight MTN markets (Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Congo Brazzaville, Nigeria, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Afghanistan and South Africa) The Google Play Store and www.ayoba.me website sell Ayoba as an OTT service in a number of markets as well.
Ayoba is also developing an open digital platform for technology from third parties. This means we have a rich and diverse product experience, which helps us to provide our customers with more value, help local developers and create local content that is tailored for local communities, “explains David Gilarranz, MTN Digital’s CEO.
Ayoba features include; free calls, money transfers, secure messaging, free-to-use, file sharing including videos amongst others.
The paradigm shift represented by this app can only be beneficial for Africa and as more users jump on it, could be a worthy competition for foreign offerings of that nature.
