How to Create a Career Ladder

July 13, 2024 • 638 views

If you're a manager, one of your most important jobs is showing team members how to grow. Here's how to build a transparent career ladder.

Define levels (e.g., Junior ? Mid ? Senior ? Lead ? Principal). For each level, list expectations in 3 categories: technical skill, collaboration, and impact. Make it clear what's required to move up specific projects, years, or competencies.

Remove mysteries by having regular career conversations (every 6 months). No one should be surprised at review time. And always provide development opportunities: training budgets, stretch assignments, mentorship.

Teams with clear career paths have lower turnover, higher engagement, and better performance. It's not just HR policy it's leadership.
