Edge Computing vs. Cloud Computing

June 08, 2024 • 394 views

Cloud computing (AWS, Azure, Google) centralizes data. Edge computing processes data near the source (sensors, cameras, phones). Why does that matter?

Edge reduces latency (milliseconds vs. seconds), saves bandwidth, and works offline. Use cases: autonomous cars (can't wait for cloud response), factory automation, smart homes, and health wearables. Cloud remains better for heavy analysis, long-term storage, and collaboration.

In 2025, expect hybrid: edge for real-time decisions, cloud for training models and historical data. For most businesses, cloud is fine. Only edge if latency is critical.

Don't chase buzzwords. Choose based on your actual performance needs.
