There's a huge difference between being frugal (smart with money) and being cheap (penny-wise, pound-foolish).
Frugal: buys quality shoes that last 5 years ($150) instead of cheap $40 shoes that last 6 months. Cheap: buys $40 shoes, then suffers foot pain $100 medical bill. Frugal: tips well, pays fair prices, but negotiates major purchases. Cheap: skimps on tip, fights over $2, alienating people.
Frugal focuses on value (what you get for what you pay). Cheap focuses only on the lowest price regardless of hidden costs. Frugal leads to wealth. Cheap leads to misery.
Rule of thumb: Spend extravagantly on things that matter to you (health, relationships, quality tools) and cut mercilessly on things that don't. That's the sweet spot.
