The Federal Government of Nigeria has partnered with Meta to launch AI Academy Nigeria, a new initiative designed to expand access to artificial intelligence training, strengthen the country’s digital talent pipeline,  and support homegrown innovation.

The programme is being implemented through the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme and the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), in collaboration with Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN).

The academy will target Nigerian developers, startups, students and early-career professionals, providing practical training designed to move participants beyond understanding AI concepts to building functional products and solutions.

Three Key Areas

AI Academy Nigeria will operate through three major components: AI Skills Development, an AI Startup Pitchathon and a six-week Developer Bootcamp.

The AI Skills Development track will be available to members of the 3MTT community across Nigeria. Participants will have access to training in generative AI fundamentals, prompt engineering, multimodal AI, data analytics, social media marketing, and application development using Meta’s Llama AI models. Courses will be delivered through online learning platforms,  including Coursera, DeepLearning.AI, and DataCamp.

The programme will also provide opportunities for top-performing participants to obtain scholarships towards Meta Blueprint certifications, alongside advertising credits to help promote their projects.

Funding Opportunities for Nigerian Startups

A major component of the initiative is the AI Startup Pitchathon, which is aimed at early-stage Nigerian startups using Meta’s AI technologies to tackle real-world challenges.

Ten startups are expected to be shortlisted to pitch their solutions at GITEX Nigeria on September 3, 2026. Two winning startups will each receive $5,000 in cash funding and $2,000 in Meta advertising credits. They will also receive an all-expenses-paid opportunity to represent Nigeria at Meta’s AI Summit in Istanbul, Türkiye, in November.

The six-week Developer Bootcamp, to be delivered by RAIN, will provide selected developers and startups with intensive hands-on training, technical guidance, and support as they work towards developing functional and market-ready AI solutions.

Building Nigeria's AI Economy

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, said the partnership would help equip young Nigerians with practical AI skills while creating pathways for innovation and globally competitive startups.

The initiative comes as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its position in Africa's rapidly expanding digital economy. Beyond training individuals, the government and its partners are looking to create an ecosystem where technical skills can translate into businesses, products, and solutions addressing local challenges.

Meta's Head of Public Policy for Anglophone West Africa, Sade Dada, said Nigeria possesses significant AI talent but needs greater access to practical training, funding, and platforms that allow innovators to take their ideas to market.

For Nigeria's growing community of technology professionals and entrepreneurs, the AI Academy represents another opportunity to gain globally relevant skills while connecting local innovation with international technology networks.

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries from education and healthcare to finance, agriculture, and media, initiatives such as AI Academy Nigeria could play an important role in preparing the country's workforce for an increasingly AI-driven economy.
